For months rumors have circulated claiming Apple has been working on an iPad mini device. Yesterday, Apple is reported to have announced they will host an event on October 23. Many sites around the internet, including Reuters, are putting two and two together and expecting this will be the day when the new mini tablet is finally unveiled. Apple itself has given no indication of what product will be announced.
The mini iPad is rumored to have a screen size of between 7 and 8 inches, allowing it to compete in the popular mid-size device category alongside the Kindle Fire and Google Nexus 7.
Apple’s timing puts their event just days before Microsoft is scheduled to reveal both Windows 8 and the new 10.6 inch Surface tablet on October 26th. The Surface tablet will retail for $199, a price comparable to the Kindle Fire and Google Nexus. Will Apple be able to price an iPad mini competitively? Some believe Apple could choose to offer the smaller tablet as a Wi-Fi only device in order to keep cost down. Others sources have theorized that Apple could also choose to lower cost by introducing the device minus the retina display sported by the new iPad. Rumors around the net seem to be estimating a $249-$349 price tag.
If rumors are right, we should know in less than two weeks. One thing seems certain, an iPad that you can put in your pocket is bound to cause a stir and attract consumers.
